Kuunatic is a female trio of psychedelic tribal music based in Tokyo, driven by diverse sounds and powerful voices. Drawing on the cultural and musical backgrounds of each member, their music features ritualistic percussion, bouncy bass lines, atmospheric keyboard sounds, and traditional Japanese instruments. Produced by Tim DeWit (Gang Gang Dance), Gate of Klüna is an experimental and captivating debut album that transcends genres and hemispheres. Kuunatic consists of Fumie Kikuchi on keyboards, Yuko Arako on drums, and Shoko Yoshida on bass. And all three sing. Creating one's own world has many advantages. Time and space can be bent to the creator's will. Kuunatic's musical concept is rooted in the imaginary. Their first EP, Kuurandia, is the name of the fictional planet they inhabit. It served as a prologue, and this debut album is a concept album about how the planet was created, evolved, and how they explored it. It consists of eight songs, each telling a story. They enjoy mixing and experimenting with everything they see, hear, experience, and think, not only in Japan but also elsewhere to create this unique world. It is advisable to keep an open mind when listening to Kuunatic's music, which seems to evoke many reactions around the world. One hears hybrid and psychedelic echoes of bands like Os Mutantes, Basil Kirchin, The Raincoats, or Manfred Hübler. With traditional Japanese music being part of the group's environment, others see them as amplified versions of miko, those young women serving a Shinto shrine. The track "Lava Naksh" evokes a form of Renaissance dance, the pavane, but with the early organ sounds of Kraftwerk. "Full Moon Spree" could be a ritualistic version of "What You Need" by The Fall. "Raven’s War" resembles a dry and dusty progressive soundtrack. The possibilities for projections are endless, but one must remember that old advice from Alan Watts: the menu is not the meal, and the map is not the territory!
