After ‘Wakin On A Pretty Daze’, his fifth album, which featured in many of 2013's top lists, Kurt Vile is preparing to add 'Believe I’m Going Down…’ to a flawless discography and further solidify his status as a hero of American independent rock and a worthy heir to Neil Young, Tom Petty, and Lou Reed.
But is it still necessary to justify any affiliation, given how much the Philadelphia musician has carved out his own path? Always accompanied by his faithful band The Violators, Kurt Vile sublimates his airy psychedelic folk-rock compositions like no one else, driven by skillful arrangements, captivating melodies, and a deceptively nonchalant voice.
This sixth album thus oscillates between magnificent picking (‘That’s Life tho’ ‘All In A Daze Work’ ‘Stand Inside’), radiant piano flourishes (‘Life Like This’, ‘Lost My Head There’, ‘Bad Omens’) and more country sounds (‘I’m An Outlaw’). Once again, the magic works, and we are hardly tired of this new dreamy and psychedelic journey from one of the greatest American songwriters of our time.
