HAFEZ MODIRZADEH learned from MAHMOUD ZOUFOUNOUN, who taught him the twelve modes of dastgâh, the Persian musical tradition. Co-signer with AMIR ELSAFFAR of the luminous Radif Suite (PI 32), the author of Post-Chromodal Out ! (PI 44) and In Convergence Liberation (PI 55) has crossed paths in the past with DON CHERRY, PETER APFELBAUM, and FRED HO. While on Post-Chromodal Out ! various retunings were conducted on the keyboard, only one retuning has this time been practiced on the piano (about eight keys per octave). On the other hand, here three pianists take turns duetting with the Iranian saxophonist. He does not shy away from special fingerings, such as repositioning his mouthpiece to reduce the intervals between major and minor modes. At times, one savors the purest delight of Persian poetry. Notably, there are two Monk-inspired covers (Pannonica and Ask Me Now) from the duo with TABORN, while KRIS DAVIS takes the liberty to deconstruct them in her own way on Facet 34 Defracted.
