A set that swings perhaps a little more than usual for Kirk Knuffke, but one that also continues his great legacy of always giving us something slightly different on each record! Kirk blows cornet here with a strong sense of rhythm for most of the time — which may not be surprising, given that the album features two bassists, Tommy Andersson and Jay Anderson, one in each channel — working with drummer Adam Nussbaum in a stripped-down mode, but one that really creates passages that give Kirk a very different energy than usual. The whole thing is not all swing — there are certainly a few more avant-garde and more contemplative moments — but overall it is another great page in the multifaceted book of Knuffke’s catalog.
