Mordechai, the new album by Khruangbin, a Houston-based band made up of bassist Laura Lee Ochoa, guitarist Mark Speer, and drummer Donald "DJ" Johnson, arrives two years after the release of the acclaimed Con Todo el Mundo. Khruangbin has always been multilingual, weaving connections between distant musical styles, such as East Asian surf rock, Persian funk, and Jamaican dub, all in a gentle harmony. A first for this band known for its primarily instrumental compositions, Mordechai features vocals on almost every track. This change reorients Khruangbin's sound, while still retaining the nomadic spirit that has always defined them. Mordechai is also a true celebration of Houston, which has nourished them, this cultural crossroads where every night you can discover country and zydeco, trap or avant-garde opera. Mordechai is a snapshot taken during a long journey, a moment all the more beautiful because it is not permanent.
