Description

After releasing Finds You Well, his second album on Ghostly International, in 2020, Canadian producer Dylan Khotin-Foote, aka Khotin, returns with Release Spirit, where he frees himself from the pressure of expectations, merging and refining all the elements of his music. His melodic sensibility and ear for atmosphere remain the undulating core of the project's DNA; whether rhythmic or ambient, a hazy task or a pristine imprint, a Khotin track has a distinct, immediately recognizable sound. He enlisted Nik Kozub for mixing and sequencing, with whom he often collaborates, particularly on their label Normals Welcome. Here, the warmth and familiarity of Khotin's dreamy and smooth style meet new ideas and frameworks, a natural progression, a modest revelation. He is more liberated, playful, and intentional in his palette of synth sounds, breakbeats, and distorted piano sounds, adding them to melancholic samples, field recordings, and other abstract snippets. Throughout the album, gusts of wind blow between the layers of composition, reminiscent of wandering spirits, allowing the record to rest in a sequence born from a dream.
