In 1974, Kevin Ayers left Harvest (EMI), his label since 1969, to join Island Records. That same year, he recorded the cult album “The Confessions Of Doctor Dream”. Produced by Rupert Hine, the album included the long title track, a cover of Soft Machine’s “Why Are We Sleeping?”, and collaborations with Mike Oldfield and Mike Ratledge, among others. It was also the first album featuring Ollie Halsall, Kevin’s long-time musical collaborator, on guitar, and it was acclaimed by critics and the public alike. The album “Sweet Deceiver” was released in 1975 and included contributions from Elton John. In 1976, Kevin returned to EMI Harvest to record “Yes, We Have No Mananas - So Get Your Mananas Today”, another highly regarded album. To promote the album, Kevin formed a new live band, which included future Police guitarist Andy Summers. “Rainbow Takeaway” was released in 1978 and Kevin’s final album on Harvest, “That’s What You Get Babe”, in 1980. This new box set, bringing together Kevin’s work from the end of his career at Island and EMI Harvest, has been remastered from the original tapes and includes all the albums mentioned, as well as 35 bonus tracks from singles, BBC Radio recordings and 13 previously unreleased live recordings made in Paris in 1975 and in Bremen in 1976. “Where Do The Stars End” also includes an illustrated book containing an unpublished essay.
