Description

Terrie was bouncing toward Vandermark with a baton and overflowing energy. It only took a few seconds for the two men to give it their all, in this strange combination of seemingly incompatible playing styles that somehow fit together. Vandermark’s rhythmic accents were extremely sharp, and were delivered with the same energy as Hessels’ on the strings. The dialogue between the two partners was constantly in motion, tinged with a strong hint of humor (especially from an unrestrained Hessels, who was mistreating his guitar and the stage with a hammer), but also instinctive; a dialogue which, despite enormous freedom, also led to an ensemble as brief as it was coherent. (Guy Peters). Ken Vandermark (US) and Terrie Hessels (NL) have been playing together for years. The two rascals were also part of Lean Left, an explosive improvisation quartet with Andy Moor and Paal Nilssen-Love. It was not until 2014 that they were seen on stage as a duo. A dozen concerts followed and led to their first duo album: Scaffolding.
