Following the release of the remarkable concert given by Keith Jarrett in Munich in 2016, this new double album presents the entirety of the performance given by the pianist during the same European tour at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in Budapest. Jarrett, whose family has Hungarian roots, considered this Budapest concert a kind of homecoming, and this particular context inspired a series of particularly creative improvisations.
While Jarrett in his early solo concerts constructed his discourse like a vast musical arch, unfolding its dramaturgy throughout the evening, his later period concerts tended to be structurally organized as small musical suites composed of independent "movements," each generating wonders of spontaneous creativity. This approach to improvisation is found in the Budapest concert, which also features, as an encore, wonderful reveries around two familiar melodies, "It's A Lonesome Old Town" and "Answer Me," masterfully transformed.
