She moves away from her usual big band playground and experiments with a smaller ensemble that allows more room for piano and improvisation. In recent years, her sextet has toured in a dozen countries, and the enthusiastic audience response has encouraged her to compose new pieces. The musicians entered the studio in Copenhagen in September 2023 to record Aldebaran, an album that reveals new facets of a complex artist. Kathrine Windfeld graduated with a jazz piano degree from the Malmö Academy of Music in 2016. A few years earlier, she had founded the Kathrine Windfeld Big Band (KWBB), which debuted in 2015 with Aircraft, followed by Latency in 2017, and Orca in 2020. Windfeld emphasizes that the sextet is much more than just a watered-down version of the big band. It allows individual personalities to shine. And, although she is best known for her big band work, she considers herself primarily an instrumentalist.
