WOW is the fourth album by Kate Shilonosova under the name Kate NV in six years, and the third for RVNG Intl. While Room for the Moon embraced (abstract) structure and took a pop turn, WOW joyfully abandons conventional song forms, slicing the experience of musical time into ecstatic fragments. Instead of employing lyricism, Kate steps out of language by commenting on her environment in non-verbal, and possibly non-human, expressions. She rewards the listener with a texture-making machine: soda fizz and bits of bubble wrap become gigantic, as if heard from an insect's perspective. Kate has long used the Broken Orchestra sample pack from Found Sound Nation, a sound catalog of over a thousand dilapidated instruments from Philadelphia public schools. These perfectly imperfect instruments are closely tied to the patchwork of synths in WOW and reworked snippets of flutes, marimba, and clarinet. This is a central element of the album's internal logic: a disdain for what is, or isn’t, broken, what is, or isn’t, a phrase or a song. WOW once again confirms Kate NV's profound inventiveness, fluidity, and dizzying technicality. By rejecting constraints and rules, Kate embodies a deep freedom, allowing objects, sounds, and processes to unfold organically.
