As I write these notes sitting on my balcony in July 2022, it has been over 9 years since the release of my first album un | ?? and more than 11 years since it was recorded. Since then, this period has been a personally tumultuous time of ups and downs – retreat, reflection, realization, reevaluation, therapy, triumph, trial and error – entangled in a ten-year creative block that made me question whether I would be able to compose again. Even though I felt there were so many things I wanted and needed to say, I felt I had lost my voice, or perhaps I had never had one in the first place. A constant knot had become tighter and tighter within me over time, but I did not understand what had created it or how it could be undone. In 2018, shaken by the collision of two transients, I suddenly saw old patterns in a new light, realizing that I had felt their familiar presences for much of my life, but had never seen them for what they were until then. After a third, I finally found the humility to surrender, and as I began to reexamine and confront myself, I slowly started to discover new answers – and new questions to ask. Then the Covid-19 pandemic hit, and the world came to a halt. Like many of us caught in the strange new calm, I retreated into inner spaces. I began to revisit sketches of ideas I had accumulated over the years, and eventually, very, very slowly, new music started to arrive.
