Ported by the anthem “Femmes, je vous aime” (lyrics: Jean- Loup Dabadie), this first album by Julien Clerc for the Virgin label was one of his best sellers. Yet its eclectic nature testifies to a difficulty felt by this fine melodist in renewing his pool of songwriters. The die-hard fans of Roda-Gil reject this period when Luc Plamondon (“Lili voulait aller danser”), Jay Alanski or Gainsbourg competed for the repertoire; an unknown named Bernard Lauze even sent him three texts by post! Later, Richard Branson, head of Virgin, would push Julien toward an album in English: failure and a falling-out with Plamondon.
