Sooner and later

Description

The Berlin pianist Julia Hülsmann returns to the trio with Sooner and Later, an album deeply infused with travels to distant destinations, produced by Manfred Eicher. In recent years, Hülsmann, bassist Marc Muelbauer, and drummer Heinrich Köbberling have indeed taken their music around the world, from Europe to the United States, Canada, Peru, Central Asia, and China, "towards something unique. This has helped us to explore new sonic territories." The journey in Central Asia finds its most explicit echo in the form of 'Biz Joluktuk', a piece that the group discovered performed by a twelve-year-old violinist in Kyrgyzstan and which was re-harmonized a little later by Julia. Once again, all the members of the trio contributed to the compositions of the album. The piece 'Thatpujai' written by Hülsmann is the anagram of Jutta Hipp and its theme incorporates typical phrases from the solos of the German jazz pianist. The program is completed by a cover of All I Need by the British band Radiohead which, like Hülsmann's compositions such as 'J.J.', 'Soon', or 'Mond' with their groove straight out of a club, highlights the rhythmic aspects of this trio's music.
