With Not Far From Here, pianist Julia Hülsmann presents her new project for which the trio she has formed for 17 years with Marc Muellbauer and Heinrich Köbberling expands to the dimensions of a quartet with the addition of Berlin saxophonist Uli Kempendorff. As the Jazzthetik newspaper noted, Kempendorf's style combines 'great flexibility with a form of impetuosity', and his arrival in Hülsmann's group undeniably brings a new energy to the ensemble. Each member of the quartet contributes to the repertoire by signing several original compositions, with Julia providing five pieces for the album. The program is completed by an inspired cover of David Bowie's song 'This Is Not America' (co-written in the 80s by Bowie, Pat Metheny, and Lyle Mays), which is performed here both as a quartet and as a solo piano.
