SUPER SON

Description

The next album in the Mr Bongo Cuban Classics series is one of the most well-known and beloved albums by Juan Pablo Torres, the iconic Super Son from 1977. A wonderful record of wild rumbas, psych-afro-latin funk, and quirky orchestral pieces featuring a big band brass section courtesy of Torres's group, Algo Nuevo. In addition to being the director of Algo Nuevo and the Cuban star ensemble Estrellas De Areito, the trombonist, conductor, arranger, and producer has also released a multitude of albums under his own name, primarily on the public label Areito/EGREM. After the revolution, the Cuban music world was contrasting. State censorship was at play, but professional musicians were paid by the government, which gave them artistic freedom. Experimentation emerged in the 70s and 80s, and Super Son is an excellent example of this. Super Son is one of the funkiest Cuban records, a playful fusion of ideas from a producer, a musician, and a band in top form, and for us, one of our favorite gems to come out of Cuba during that time.
