Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams have decided to release their solo albums on 26/02/21. “Denizen Tenant” features 12 tracks, including the Beatles cover “If I Fell,” which Williams cites as the song that taught him the power of harmonies and vocal arrangements. On Peter Gabriel’s “Don’t Give Up,” it is his daughter Hannah who sings. These recordings feature the constant presence of guitarists Steve Lukather and Mike Landau, as well as percussionist Lenny Castro. “Mike Landau has played on my music since I was a teenager and he knows exactly what to do. He inspires me and takes me further in my writing. With Steve Lukather, it’s the same thing. Lenny, he knows exactly what fits and offers me a multitude of choices. Like Mike, I’ve worked with Lenny since I was a kid.” This record is part of the collaboration of the Lukather/Paich/Williams triumvirate. Williams co-wrote “Liberty Man” with Paich, who also plays Hammond B3 keyboard on “Black Dahlia.” “I love writing with Dave. On this track, as on many others, we spent hours talking about history, religion, music, literature, cinema… Like excited kids, that leads us toward a subject or a concept to end up with a song, then we keep certain ideas and discard others. While doing that, we shape the melodies and reshape them.” Masterful work!
