Description

The music written by Mendelssohn for the play A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM is his most famous work, notably thanks to the famous "wedding march." But the music composed by Mendelssohn is very rarely played in its entirety. Jordi Savall restores the entire score and shows, with the help of a team of seasoned actors, how it interacts with the text of Shakespeare, which also carries its own music. As often with Jordi Savall, this album allows for a rediscovery that sheds new and definitive light on what we thought we knew.
An unmatched completeness! In addition to the famous music composed by Mendelssohn for orchestra, choir, and soloists, this box set offers:
- the melodramas with the spoken parts, which show how the text of Shakespeare is highlighted by Mendelssohn's music. - an abridged version of the rest of the play, performed by professional actors allowing the complete plot to be followed. The texts are recited and sung in English (disc 1 - selection and supervision by Irina Brook) and in German (disc 2), since the work was created in Germany.
For listeners who wish to hear only the music without the spoken texts, discs 3 and 4 offer the possibility of a "concert version" in English or German.
