Jordi Savall has been exploring the repertoires of the East on record for over 15 years, seeing in the exchange between musicians an opportunity for rapprochement between peoples and cultures. In this new album, his historical ensemble Hespèrion XXI plays alongside the musicians of the Orpheus 21 ensemble, which he founded in the tragic wake of the war in Syria with musicians from all backgrounds, to show that migration should not be exclusively perceived as a crisis and to draw attention to the dignity shared by all. The idea, prevalent in the Middle Ages, of a light coming from the East (‘ex oriente lux’) is updated in this album made of surprising similarities and fruitful encounters between repertoires from Syria, Bangladesh, Kurdistan, Afghanistan, Greece, Lebanon, Iraq, Morocco, Tunisia, and Turkey.
