After The Curtains Close

Description

The fourth album from New Zealander Jonathan Bree (active since 1997, first with The Brunettes, then solo since 2013) sees the artist's orchestral pop take some unexpected turns into the experimental and kitschy territory populated by some of his French heroes of the 1960s. The final result is a formidable album that retains Bree's musical DNA while being remarkably varied. Bree finds a great balance here between darkness and silliness, without appearing disingenuous. Bree's vocals are showcased in a full range of styles, his baritone croon jumps octaves across all 12 tracks, and he even appears in falsetto. Grandiose and danceable pop arrangements, fun orchestral pop full of double meanings, his talent for writing for the female lead vocal hasn't been as overtly exposed since his work with The Brunettes, but Britta Phillips (LUNA) takes on this role, with clear inspiration from The Shangri-La's. Remarkable!
