Across four albums (including the famous Masada Rock released under the name ZORN in 2004), guitarist Jon Madof’s trio, Rashanim, has become a master at dressing flamboyant jazz-rock in spellbinding Jewish melodies. On Zion 80, the lineup expanded to thirteen members (an impressive cast) put rabbi Shlomo Carlebach’s compositions through the groove machine of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s afrobeat. This new release, from a group reduced to eleven players, draws on the refined compositions of Zorn’s Book Of Angels. They were recorded at BILL LASWELL’s studio in New Jersey.
