It's not punk rock, but it uses all the same ingredients: sex, drugs, death, loss, desire, and alienation. The difference lies in the speed and melody of the songs, which unfold in a beautiful yet harsh landscape. It's Americana as the scariest blues and the saddest country can be. It's a record made as Muddy Waters would do it, all thrown into a very small, sweaty room until the song seeps through the mesh of the net. Neko Case, Kristin Hersh, Cindy Lee Berryhill, and Veronica Jane (Doe's 16-year-old daughter) provide the female counterpoint that Exene's role was in X, and Exene contributes by co-writing "Hwy 5," a duet with Neko. Grant-Lee Phillips and Dave Alvin lend their unique talents in beautifully electric, heartbreaking, and wild songs, respectively. Not for the faint of heart, this album was recorded in ultra black and white.
