My favorite things

Description

Just a few months after the earthquake of Giant Steps, John Coltrane returns in quartet form with My Favorite Things, and fans of the virtuoso then discover a photo of the musician blowing into a straight horn, unfamiliar to jazzmen of the time: a soprano saxophone. For Coltrane, it is the pretext, by deliberately unsettling himself, to open up to new experiments that are ever more daring, ever more dizzying. “It’s like having another hand,” he said at the time. And with this record, Coltrane already establishes himself as the leader of an entire avant-garde, notably by throwing himself wholeheartedly into modal jazz (to a waltz rhythm!) inspired by Indian music, through the track that gives the album its title.
