This is only John Coltrane's third recording as a leader, and while he still has some of the most beautiful pages of his career to write, his assertion as both an instrumentalist and a composer is an achievement that few have accomplished. It is the affirmation of a style whose strength remains intact to this day, as evidenced by the ease with which his compositions precede and follow the standard "I'm Old Fashioned" by Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer. But it is not only due to the saxophonist's prowess that "Blue Train" has remained an essential album; it also owes much to the rest of his exceptional sextet, one of the finest ensembles he has ever had. The two other soloists who support him are the very young Lee Morgan, only 19 years old and a rising star on the trumpet, and the formidable trombonist Curtis Fuller, not to mention the brilliant rhythm section – Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and drummer Philly "Joe" Jones – whose work on the demanding "Locomotion" speaks for itself.
