A decade has passed since John Carpenter recorded the material that would become Lost Themes, his first album of non-cinematic music. These vibrant, synth-driven songs, created in collaboration with his son Cody Carpenter and his godson Daniel Davies, marked the beginning of a musical renaissance for the pioneering composer and director. With Lost Themes IV: Noir, they draw inspiration this time from the rich history of film noir. Since the first Lost Themes, John has referred to these compositions as "soundtracks for the films you have in your head." In the fourth installment of the series, those films are noir films. Like the cinematic genre that influenced them, what makes these songs "noir" is sometimes slippery and difficult to define, and cannot simply be reduced to a collection of tropes. The scores of great American film noirs were largely orchestral, while the Carpenters and Davies rely on a solid backbone of synthesizers and guitars.
