Bach's Mass in B minor is undoubtedly his most spectacular choral work, and this "one voice per part" interpretation by the Dunedin Consort (2010) achieves levels of clarity and expression that are quite rare in modern choral performances. A huge critical success for the Dunedin Consort, this recording has been described as "chilling," an "electric interpretation," and "a definitive recording"; it was notably honored with an "Editor's Choice" by Gramophone. The Dunedin Consort here presents the first recording of the work in the 2006 Breitkopf & Härtel edition prepared by Joshua Rifkin, a specialist in authentic historical performance, who fully endorsed John Butt's interpretation. The music benefits from the very essence of the group's qualities: skillful virtuosic choral execution coupled with characterful solo singing. This recording features several soloists from the Dunedin Consort's recording of the St. Matthew Passion, which was labeled a "benchmark recording" by BBC Music Magazine.
