Intercontinental

Description

Reissue of a 1971 trio recording by the great guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Eberhard Weber and drummer Kenny Clare. Joe Pass looks like someone's uncle and plays guitar like no one else." That's what New York Magazine said about the man considered one of the greatest jazz guitarists of the 20th century. Pass's masterful melodic counterpoint and quicksilver improvisational style flow throughout "Intercontinental." Because the American had a first-rate bassist in Eberhard Weber at his side during his MPS session in June 1970 in the idyllic Black Forest in Germany, Pass could focus on melody and chords. Weber, from Stuttgart, Germany, would soon develop his own electric bass, but at this stage he was still playing the traditional acoustic double bass. The third member of the group was British drummer Kenny Clare. Pass chose the recording program, mixing standards with originals. It's incredible how typical big band pieces like "Stompin' at the Savoy" and "Lil' Darlin'" sound in a trio; Pass and his company swing as if they were Count Basie and his orchestra.
