With the release of ‘Our Daily Bread,’ their third album for the ECM label, Joe Lovano’s Trio Tapestry continues to develop music that is both lyrical and atmospheric, founded on intensive listening among the musicians and deep collective concentration.
Lovano's themes and harmonic choices offer a rich tapestry of material that the trio magnificently seizes upon to explore, through melodic developments, a whole universe of precious sonic textures and varied moods. Marilyn Crispell is the ideal pianist for this music, orchestrating it as it unfolds with a sensitivity nurtured by both contemporary chamber music and post-Coltrane improvisation. On drums, Carmen Castaldi, connected to Lovano since adolescence, adorns the music with his own sensibility, whether through the poetic finesse of his cymbal work. In the middle of the program, Lovano delivers a magnificent tenor saxophone solo with 'One for Charlie,' a tribute to Charlie Haden, imbuing each note with a moving weight, just as the great bassist, to whom the piece is dedicated, knew so well how to do.
