Compared to Joe Colley (Crawl Unit)'s work, which he once described as "small noises arranged on a piece of plastic," so many other noises sound like they are straining for shameless overcompensation. His material has always been understated, and "Deformation Of Tone" takes him in a colder, harsher, and more desolate direction. The rasp of an unnamed conspiracy theorist/motivational speaker, present more for its intonation than anything else, punctuates these rather sculptural 33 minutes of purring machinery, beeping appliances, vacant-faced rotary drones that swell and merge with unnaturally regimented beehive rustles and perfectly obnoxious high-gain squelch—all built with masterly timing and sense of scale.
