The promising noise-pop band Joanna Gruesome is releasing their debut album, *Weird Sister*. Made of irresistible pop melodies accompanied by dissonant chords, their songs are played over nervous punk drumbeats. Recorded by Hookworms' producer, the album draws inspiration from the DIY punk scene (Riot Grrl/noisepop/C86/K-Records) as well as post-hardcore bands like Drive Like Jehu or Converge. Joanna Gruesome offers a very diverse album, quiet when you least expect it, yet powerful. The members all met in an anger management therapy group. The songs are therefore not all cheerful, evoking mental illness and the dark side of the soul, although the lyrics are still sprinkled with comical allusions to the devil, zombies, and comic books.
