After playing on Miles Davis's first studio session at Blue Note, J.J. Johnson compiled the sessions recorded between 1953 and 1954 to release 'The Eminent J.J. Johnson, Vol. 1' in 1955. On this masterpiece, the trombonist surrounded himself with luminaries such as Kenny Clarke (Drums), Wynton Kelly (Piano), Clifford Brown (Trumpet), and Charles Mingus (Double Bass).
After a formative period in Fats Navarro's orchestra in the early 1940s, J.J. Johnson joined the prestigious orchestras of Benny Carter and Count Basie. From 1946, the trombone virtuoso adapted his instrument to bebop and joined smaller ensembles led by Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Woody Herman, and Charlie Parker.
