Elegantly modern, and yet more authentic than today’s psychedelic avant-garde, “Jetenderpaul Presents the Modal Lines” achieves a tour de force across 13 tracks: irony without emptiness, homage without imitation. This third album by Jetenderpaul reveals these young indie pop musicians, fresh out of college, embracing pop melodies at the heart of their bedroom musical experiments. Each track on “The Modal Lines” lasts about three minutes, offering greater cohesion and melodic development than their previous releases, and brimming with brilliant metamorphoses. It features experimentation with complex pop formulas, revisited and transformed, as well as an abundance of catchy melodies. They could be compared to The Flaming Lips, Guided By Voices or Ween, but also to bands close to Elephant Six such as Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power or Of Montreal, with a less pronounced psychedelic touch. If the catchy melodies and off-kilter sounds of their songs are not enough for you, Jetenderpaul uses an arsenal of varied instruments and sounds: sitar, bells, timpani, strings, analog sounds... Some artists move from one genre to another, but here, as elsewhere, JTP blends and blurs them. It is therefore no surprise to find youthful pop influences, old-time rock 'n' roll and a myriad of other fragments. Jetenderpaul remains true to its distant origins, a true chameleon of modern music. Formed in Olathe, Kansas, in 1996, Jetenderpaul seizes the soul of the Midwest and puts it through the blender of paranoid pop. Their music could be described as subversive covers or a reimagining of The Beatles, but the result is aggressive music, imbued with humility and depth.
