Galaxy Heart is the fourth album by Jessica Moss for Constellation, the companion record to Phosphenes (2021). It completes a body of work that the Montreal-based composer-violinist wrote, performed, and self-produced during a period of deep isolation throughout 2020. While Phosphenes showcased some of Moss's most deliberate and accomplished post-classical compositions to date, Galaxy Heart vibrates with a raw and sought-after energy, juxtaposing rough and refined pieces. Expanding the palette to include sharp, semi-improvised electric guitars, as well as remote contributions from drummer Jim White (Xylouris White, Dirty Three) and bassist Thierry Amar (Godspeed You! Black Emperor), the album carves out an (essentially) instrumental space of anxiety, melancholy, determination, and conviction. She uses amplified and processed violin and voice to create complex works that blend expressive electronics, drone, experimental minimalism, and post-classical; her distinctive melodic sensibility often channels tropes from Klezmer, the Balkans, and the Middle East, combined with the textures and timbral noise of post-punk, industrial metal, and ambient. Moss played in the cult post-punk agit-prop band Thee Silver Mt. Zion (2000-2015), contributed to countless albums by Carla Bozulich, Vic Chesnutt, and Matana Roberts, and more recently participated in albums by Sarah Davachi and Big Brave. She has released three solo albums on Constellation since 2017. For fans of Dirty Three, The Body, Stars Of The Lid, Kali Malone, This Will Destroy You, Sarah Davachi, Thee Silver Mt Zion.
