Warpaint bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg, whose all-female quartet is signed to Rough Trade and boasts two mesmerizing albums, is embarking on a solo journey with her debut album 'right on!' released under the pseudonym jennylee.
Co-produced by Lindberg and Norm Block, the 10 tracks that make up this first solo effort were all written by the young woman and recorded last spring at Happy Ending studios in Silverlake, California, with the participation of Norm Block (Plexi, Mark Lanegan), Dan Elkan (Them Hills, Broken Bells, Alela Diane), and Stella Mozgawa, her fellow Warpaint drummer. Quite an impressive lineup of guests!
While 'right on!' undeniably maintains a very Warpaint-esque groove (and we're not complaining), jennylee slightly diverges from the dark, ethereal rock of her original band by incorporating new wave and goth elements into her compositions. From the vaporous bass and airy vocals of 'blind' to the contagious urgency of 'boom boom,' the delayed guitars and bouncing bass of 'bully,' and the almost celestial vocals of 'fresh,' one can only fall under the spell of the young woman's unique and intimate world. A mystical album that demands to be discovered!
