Johan Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) composed the six sonatas for keyboard and violin while in the service of Prince Leopold of Köthen (1717-1723), a period during which he focused on writing secular instrumental music. These works are not written as sonatas for a melodic instrument and continuo realized at the keyboard, as was generally the case at the time. Instead, Bach composed these six sonatas as three-voiced works, pure trio sonatas. One voice is assigned to the violin and two to the two hands of the keyboard, which gives their writing a contrapuntal depth. This reinterpretation of the keyboard and violin sonatas is accompanied by a proposal for an organological journey. The six sonatas have been broken down into three duos, each recorded on a different organ-violin pair, while maintaining a stylistic unity with the types of instruments that Bach knew and played. The three organs are of Eastern German aesthetics; the makers of the violins that inspired the recorded instruments are contemporaries of Bach. The program also offers a seventh sonata for keyboard and violin (BWV 1028), which is much better known in its version for viola da gamba. The program also includes two lesser-known sonatas for violin and continuo by Bach, inspired by the Italian style, allowing the listener to better grasp the differences in writing between the two models. Freddy Eichelberger has also chosen to introduce the works for keyboard and violin with solo organ pieces in the manner of a prelude, which highlight the sound of each instrument. This 3-CD box set, which celebrates thirty years of musical collaboration between Odile Edouard and Freddy Eichelberger, features a different organ-violin pair for each. Three locations have been selected primarily for their qualities: the Saint-Louis Church in Saint-Étienne (Haute-Loire), the Temple of Boudry (Switzerland), and the Temple of the Foyer de l’Âme (Paris).
