Bach Busoni

Description

For Ferruccio Busoni, Bach's music is at the roots and foundation of piano playing. His numerous transcriptions testify to this viewpoint, while his monumental Fantasia Contrappuntistica attempts to provide a conclusion to the unfinished L’Art de la Fugue. Busoni faced many criticisms, to which he responded: "Music is both in time and out of time. [...] There is no old and new. There is only the known and the unknown." Today - after a century and many trends regarding the "authentic" way to play Bach - it may finally be time to rediscover the true voice of this great musician; for Busoni, "music is like a divine child, which does not touch the earth with its feet - it hovers." Jan Michiels takes us on this journey with a Bechstein instrument from 1860 and a brand new parallel string grand piano by Chris Maene.
