Description

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach held his father, Johann Sebastian, in high regard. However, this did not prevent him from following his own path. Even when Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach applied for the position of Thomaskantor following Johann Sebastian, he revealed no artistic connection to his father. On the contrary, he emphasized his compositional independence with one of his choral works and presented himself confidently with a Magnificat. In Leipzig, this inevitably and directly made him subject to comparison with his father, who, at the age of 38, on July 2, 1723, shortly after becoming Thomaskantor, had also presented a Magnificat as one of his major early works. To this day, Carl Philipp Emanuel's Magnificat is compared to that of his father.
