Czech-American jazz pianist Jan Hammer, an exceptional keyboardist and composer, is best known for his film and television scores. In 1984, he was commissioned to compose the theme and background music for the new American police series Miami Vice. In November 1985, the Miami Vice soundtrack reached number one on the Billboard charts in the United States. With over four million copies sold (at a time when the CD was just taking hold in the market), the album was certified quadruple platinum. At the Grammy Awards in February 1986, Hammer's Miami Vice Theme won two awards.
Born in Czechoslovakia, Hammer had already made a name for himself as a member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, as a keyboardist on Joni Mitchell's album Mingus, and through his collaborations with Jerry Goodman, Jeff Beck, Al Di Meola, Neal Schon (Journey guitarist), and John Abercrombie.
