Sixteen years have passed since the untimely death of Isaac Hayes at the age of 65, but he remains one of the most popular and iconic singer-songwriters-arrangers in the history of soul music. The albums Hayes made for Stax’s Enterprise label remain the benchmark for “symphonic soul” and sound as incredibly brilliant as they did at the time of their release. In addition to being part of a small group of artists who helped grow the soul album market, Ike was a singles artist who enjoyed consistent success, placing 16 consecutive 45s in the R&B chart between 1969 and 1976 - most of which also crossed over to pop. The biggest hits have already been gathered in anthologies, but “Hot Buttered Singles” is the first series to present the A and B sides of all the 45s from Hayes’s “Yellow Stax” era in chronological order, and in their original single versions, several of which had never appeared on CD before.
