Sixteen years have passed since Isaac Hayes’ untimely death at the age of 65, yet he remains one of the most popular and iconic singer-songwriter-arrangers in soul music history. The albums Hayes made for Stax’s Enterprise imprint remain the benchmark for ‘symphonic soul’ and sound as amazingly brilliant as when they were first released. As well as being part of a small group of artists who helped grow the market for soul albums, Ike was a consistently successful singles artist, placing 16 consecutive 45s on the R&B chart between 1969 and 1976 – most of which also crossed over to pop. The biggest hits have previously been gathered on anthologies, but “Hot Buttered Singles” is the first series to feature both A and B sides of all of Hayes’ ‘Yellow Stax’-era 45s in chronological order, and in their original single versions, several of which have never appeared on CD before. Many of these tracks are among his most highly regarded recordings. You will hear them here as you would have heard them on soul and pop radio over half a century ago. Abundantly annotated, beautifully illustrated, and coming to you – on CD AND double vinyl – in a package an artist of Ike’s stature thoroughly deserves… Look out for Volume 2 – which tells the story of Hayes’ singles right up to 1977, and includes all the early singles on Ike’s own HBS label – in 2025!
