Dance Of The Red Herrings

Description

The debut solo record from Manchester-based writer Nathan McIlroy, formerly of Frazer King. The record is produced by Jim Noir, whose sonic fingerprints sculpt the raw materials into a strange pop opus. Noir is also releasing the record on his Dook Recordings label, and played drums and backing vocals on several tracks. Indian Pale Male - Ground Dirt Recorded by McIlroy's longtime friend and musical associate Big A, the songs are laden with cracked harmonies and homemade instrumentation, including found materials used as percussion. The duo drew on the talents of fellow travellers for backing vocals and rhythm tracks, leading to the live formation becoming a trio, with Ben Price (bass) and Charlie Garson (drums) coming onboard. Commenting on the writing process, McIlroy explains: “It was written during a period of madness and offensive behaviour. The songs switch between themes, and reflect the erroneous beliefs we cling to when our perceived realities are threatened. There are also some jokes.” Pushing against a streaming culture that values best tracks and playlists, the record is intended to be listened to in one sitting, with side A showcasing more extroverted songs, in all their noisy swagger, and side B being more introspective and honest.
