Idiot Saint Crazy Orchestra is probably one of the most unique and exciting experimental rock adventures to come out of France in a long time. On the map, Idiot Saint Crazy Orchestra occupies a decidedly eccentric position: a northern port and industrial city, Dunkirk. In the musical space it has been helping to create for several years, the group is activating a new direction. Lost in a labyrinth of references, one might imagine an unheard-of synthesis bringing together the best moments of The Residents, Otto Von Schirach, Fred Frith, Robert Wyatt, Steve Moore, Philip Glass, Ennio Morricone, Slayer, Steve Reich, Naked City, Mr Bungle, Iva Bittova, and Diamanda Galas. Rhapsodic, overflowing with multiple excursions, playing with codes and genres, the world of Idiot Saint Crazy Orchestra is "post-rock" in an unusual way, virtuously combining pop deconstruction, psych rock, death metal, blues, repetitive music, and opera. On stage, the musicians wear herringbone costumes and masks, multiplying identities and creating a disturbing play of doubles and illusions. Their music, at once imaginative, structured, and powerful, is by turns hieratic, grotesque, and poignant. The group revolves around a core composed of guitarist Valentin Carette, bassist Antonin Carette, and drummer Antoine Chotteau. They are often joined by singer Delphine Delegorgue and saxophonist and keyboardist Adrien Michel. Months of isolation and sacrifices that few groups would undoubtedly be willing to endure have resulted in a brilliant and strange album. Bold and accomplished, disorienting and grandiose, The Sea of Paradise is a crate digger's fantasy. Dozens of solitary listens are not enough to exhaust its complexity and depth.
