"Trumpets of Michel-Ange" by Ibrahim Maalouf is much more than a new album. It is the first stone of a vast educational edifice that ultimately aims to make accessible to everyone the atypical instrument he has always played and invented by his father more than half a century ago: the quarter-tone trumpet.
“Symbolically, this album celebrates the transmission between generations, but also love, family, and all those universal values that are being lost in our time,” explains Ibrahim Maalouf. “Concretely, it is also an opportunity for me to realize my father's dream, which is to share his brilliant invention with the world through unifying, festive, and emotion-filled compositions.”
Ibrahim Maalouf, born in Lebanon and raised between Lebanon and France, is a jazz instrumentalist who has gathered a very large audience worldwide. Initially a prodigy of classical music, he was spotted very young by his peers during international competitions. Very quickly, he preferred the freedom of jazz, which rewarded him for his first albums. Lauded as a “virtuoso” by the New York Times, he has released 15 albums, two of which were nominated for Grammy Awards.
In 2017, it was the famous American producer Quincy Jones who discovered him and became his manager in the United States. In 2023, he performed at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles alongside Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Jacob Collier, and a few other big names for Quincy Jones' birthday, returned for the 3rd time in his career to a sold-out Accor Arena in Paris, and concluded the year in front of millions of people at the Arc de Triomphe (Paris) on December 31.
Ibrahim is also very involved in the world of cinema: he composed the soundtrack for the upcoming film by Claude Lelouch and is a jury member at several film festivals, including Cannes, Cabourg, and Deauville.
Ibrahim has always multiplied collaborations with the greatest artists in very different styles, Wynton Marsalis, Jon Batiste, Josh Groban, Sting, Lara Fabian, A$AP Rocky, Angélique Kidjo, Sharon Stone, etc.
On this 16th album, he wanted to collaborate exclusively with instrumentalists: from the New Orleans star Trombone Shorty to jazz bassist Endea Owens (Detroit), as well as his friends Toumani Diabate, Sidiki Diabate, Matthieu Chedid, and Golshireh Farahani.
Ibrahim Maalouf, who has sold nearly a million albums in recent years, wanted this new opus to be a true instrumental and festive celebration.
“I named the album, the instruments, and the new academy we are launching, Trumpets of Michel Ange, in honor of my father,” explains Ibrahim Maalouf. “This instrument is his ultimate masterpiece and my only legacy, which I share with the world.”
