Ibeyi are twin sisters born to a Cuban father, the celebrated percussionist Anga Diaz (Irakere, Buena Vista Social Club), and a Venezuelan mother. A simple video for (the late) Mondomix allowed the young Parisian women to sign with one of the most prestigious labels, XL Recordings. But their beautiful story doesn't end there: Richard Russell, the label boss, was so charmed by them that he offered to produce their first album himself. Ibeyi is thus the latest album produced by Richard Russell, after having worked on excellent albums with Bobby Womack, Gil Scott-Heron, and Damon Albarn.
After several recording sessions in London, Ibeyi introduced themselves to the public with the track "Oya," reminiscent of Björk's early recordings—a hybrid track blending electronic music sung in English, French, and Yoruba with world music. Ibeyi is an anomaly in today's music world, but it should undoubtedly appeal to a wide audience eager for organic discoveries.
