"I have a way of loving too many things to take on just one shape," sings Jilian Medford on the eponymous song "Shapeshifter," which she repeats like a mantra. As the frontwoman of IAN SWEET, she is the narrator who guides us through "Shapeshifter," which is above all a meditation on solitude. It delves into the process of self-awareness and the loss of love. But it's also an ode to friendship. IAN SWEET formed in 2014 when Medford was just days away from starting her tour, and the drummer she had hired informed her he wouldn't be coming. She messaged Tim Cheney, IAN SWEET's current drummer, who agreed to join her on the tour. Accompanied by Cheney's drumming and Damien Scalise's playful instrumentation, "Shapeshifter" becomes a festive, self-deprecating outlet.
