I Fagiolini explores the dazzling choral sound world of Orazio Benevoli - a prominent figure in 17th-century Italian music. As maestro of the papal choir and composer of four-choir masses for grand occasions, Benevoli revitalized the style with vocal lines full of cross rhythms, voluptuous tutti with unexpected dissonances. Despite its beauty and historical significance, there have been few attempts to record Benevoli's music. His Missa Tu es Petrus - recorded here for the first time - is based on the famous motet by Palestrina and was undoubtedly written for the newly completed St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. It is presented here alongside four delightful motets by his contemporary Bonifazio Graziani, each also recorded for the first time.
