Matt Scottoline, singer, songwriter and frontman of HURRY, one of Philadelphia's best indie rock bands, is an anxious person by nature. That's understandable: we live in stressful times, the world is changing so fast it's hard to keep up. For Matt, though, these anxieties are more personal this time around: the prospect of soon becoming a father, a major birthday on the horizon, and lingering questions about his place in the musical landscape. Does the world really need a new Hurry album? Judging by the ten tracks on Zoned Out, Hurry's sixth studio album and fourth on Lame-O Records, the answer is a resounding yes. Recorded at The Metal Shop studio by Ian Farmer and co-produced by Farmer and Scottoline, the album finds Hurry at the top of their game. Once again joined by Rob DeCarolis on drums, Joe DeCarolis on bass and Justin Fox on guitar, the band sounds tighter than ever; their perfect harmony gives the impression of natural fluidity. From the first track, "All Sunk In", with its catchy electric guitars and infectious melody, the tone is set. The amps are louder, the groove has a laid-back confidence, and Matt's voice is better than ever. "Moving After You", the album's standout track, sounds like the best song Teenage Fanclub never recorded, making Gerard Love's guest vocals all the more perfect. It's timeless pop tailor-made for our times.
