Their sound is dirty post-industrial cinematic rock, a dozen dripping subway stops away from any recognizable civilization, as futuristic as it is rooted in a sordid legacy. Chris Spencer's (Unsane) attack on his Telecaster carves a more nuanced (but no less intense) path, minimizing distortion for sharp chords and note choices – a heaviness more implied than hammered home. Jim Coleman's (Cop Shoot Cop) electronics and sampling provide a dystopian soundscape, an unsettling and agitated frame for Spencer's more grounded guitar and vocals. Surgical punctuations from drummer Phil Puleo (Cop Shoot Cop, Swans) and Chris Pravdica's (Swans) lethal bass contortions anchor this shifting terrain. The album was recorded at BC Studios by NYC producer Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Unsane, Cop Shoot Cop) and engineered and mixed by Alan Camlet at Hoboken Recorders. Human Impact is a four-man band controlling a musical genre they helped create. As much a nod to an unsterilized, pre-Giuliani New York as a soundtrack to a dystopian Ballard novel, Human Impact is the score to a difficult future fast approaching.
