RIFT is the second release by the Icelandic band Hugar on the XXIM Records label. The duo Hugar is the shared musical project of Bergur Þórisson and Pétur Jónsson, two multi-talented instrumentalists, composers and producers, friends since childhood. Their new album is a balanced and contemplative blend of ambient and contemporary neoclassical elements such as meditative strings, covering a wide range of themes born from a simple yet profound observation in their native Iceland. Inspired by the rift that runs through Þingvellir, the national park located 40 km northeast of the capital, the band reflected on what happens when things are deconstructed. Songs. Ideas. Even entire countries. For them, the void they create is fertile ground for new ideas and new beginnings - the rift (‘Rift’ in English) as a source of creativity and vital force. On this record, the duo works to twist and manipulate sounds, to find new ways of arriving at what, at first listen, seems familiar but is not exactly what one thinks. All of this is part of their mystery and power, and of their desire to emphasize that sometimes, nothing is what it seems; to find answers, one must dive deeper, and have a keen eye for detail. It is therefore with this in mind that the band offers us a new captivating studio album of euphoric instrumental music, meditative rhythms and epic soundscapes reflecting the timeless and evolving nature of their native Iceland.
