A little more than a year after the release of the album Highest Point In Cliff Town, HOOTON TENNIS CLUB returns more mature and adult with Big Box Of Chocolates. While it retains the freshness and inventiveness of the early days of the English indie-rock quartet, this new album also offers a richer instrumentation and lyrics with deeper themes. The twelve tracks that make it up are both optimistic and filled with uncertainty, addressing topics such as love, the loss of a loved one, and nihilism. Recorded in three weeks in Scotland and produced by Edwyn Collins, the album reflects the band's desire to be as spontaneous as possible. Ideas flowed, melodies buzzed to create an album inspired by Big Star, Can, and writers Kurt Vonnegut, Hermann Hesse, and Henry Miller. With Big Box Of Chocolates, one is amused, tempted, tormented.
