HEY!TONAL is an experimental band created by Mitch Cheney (Rumah Sakit, Sweep the Leg Johnny) and Alan Mills (Chiisai-oto). Through a unique creative process, each band member was recorded separately between 2006 and 2008 across a vast geographical area encompassing New York City, Chicago, St Augustine, Florida, San Diego, and Nantes, France. Several iconic figures from the independent and experimental scene make up this extraordinary band, with Dave Davison (Maps & Atlases), Kevin Shea (Storm & Stress), and Theo Katsaounis (Joan of Arc) joining the founding duo. Kenseth Thibideau (Sleeping People, Rumah Sakit) and Julien Fernandez (Chevreuil) also appear, but only on the opening track. Originally released in 2009 on CD by the Africantape label, the album has been remastered by Carl Saff and is now available on vinyl. Mitch Cheney initially conceived HEY!TONAL as a project to be called Drummers’ Perspectives. In 2006, he had the idea (using the Reason application) of replacing drum samples with guitar and dulcimer samples. He then composed melodies based on drum rhythms, as opposed to the standard songwriting process that favors the inverse approach: playing drums to accompany melodies. He later met Alan Mills, a visionary and complementary creator, with whom he formed the core of the project. Over a long period of collaboration, they composed the eight tracks on the album by combining the personalities of the musicians they recorded individually in different locations.
